Chris Tolsdorf – Head Coach and Program Director
Chris started as Boy’s Head Coach in the fall of 2015 and took over as the director of the Unionville program during the summer of 2016. Chris has coached both the Varsity Boy’s and Girl’s crews as well as the Novice Boys. His crews have won medals at The Cooper Cup, Philadelphia City Championships, and USRowing Mid-Atlantics and he has taken crews to The Head of the Charles and SRAA Nationals. He has overseen strong growth of the program – over the past two years the team has purchased four racing shells, cox boxes, rowing machines, and equipment to allow all our athletes to perform at the highest level.
Chris rowed for four years at Yale University, rowing for three years in the Varsity 8. In addition to rowing in college, he also rowed in the US Olympic Festival (a national team development event) winning three Golds and a Bronze. He is a two-time medalist at the Head of the Charles, winning a Silver in the Youth 8 event and a Silver in the Championship 4+ event. His 4+ also won a Silver in the Open 4+ at The Head of the Schuylkill and he has a Gold from Canadian Henley. Chris was also invited to train at the US National Team camp in 1991.
After graduation Chris started his coaching career first at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and then at Georgetown, the University of Virginia, and Drexel University. Under his direction, his crews won medals at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Dad Vails and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships.
Chris lives in West Chester with his wife and three children.
Jake Filby – Assistant Coach – Varsity Boys
Jake joined the Unionville staff in the fall of 2016, where he assisted with varsity before moving to coach the boys’ novice squad. During the spring, the novice team made the finals of the Philadelphia City Championships and finished third at the USRowing Mid-Atlantic Championships.
A senior at the University of Delaware, Jake began his coxing career at Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York. He has captured a silver in the Lightweight 8+ and bronze in the Heavyweight 8+ at the Dad Vail Regatta as well as being invited to train with the USRowing Under-23 National Team Selection Camp. Jake also regularly competes with Vesper Boat Club and has helped the program capture numerous trophy wins at the Independence Day Regatta and Club National Championships.
Maegan Hailey – Assistant Coach – Novice Girls
Maegan graduated from Unionville High School in 2017. She will be a freshman at West Chester University in the fall majoring in psychology and minoring in American Sign Language. She spent all four years of high school on the Unionville Rowing Team. She started her novice year rowing and after three seasons switched to coxing. She couldn’t be more stoked to come back to the team to coach the novice girls!
Rob Byrne – Assistant Coach – Novice Boys
A Unionville High School graduate, Rob rowed for Newport Rowing Club his junior and senior years. Rob then attended Temple University, rowing in the Varsity 8 that won a bronze medal at the Dad Vail Regatta, a gold medal at the San Diego Crew Classic, and earned Temple a bid to the IRA National Championships for the first time in 10 years.
Rosemary Crawford – Assistant Coach
Rosemary joined the Unionville coaching staff at the start of the spring 2015 season. For the past few seasons she has been working primarily with the girls’ novice crews. She has also assisted the head coaches with Learn-to-Row summer sessions.
Rosemary has been rowing for over 40 years in both sweep and sculling boats. She learned to row at the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club (PGRC), where she competed successfully in regional and national regattas for several years as a lightweight rower. She also coached novice rowers during her time at PGRC.
When the Wilmington Rowing Center (WRC) was established in 1984, Rosemary left PGRC to become one of the founding members of WRC. She has raced in numerous Masters Regattas throughout the years and has served in several board positions, including Racing Chair, Rowing Chair, and Scholastic Liaison for high school crews rowing out of WRC.
Rosemary and her husband Chuck (longtime coach at the University of Delaware) live in Wilmington. They have three grown children and three grandchildren.
Pete Hricko – Assistant Coach – Pete (and his wife) rowed at Drexel University. Their daughter, Anna, rows for Unionville. Pete started with the program in the fall of 2016 and brings a tremendous work ethic and enthusiasm for helping all our athletes learn, grow, and get fast.
Ed Olsavicky – Assistant Coach- Ed joined the Unionville coaching staff at the start of the spring 2015 season. Ed is always eager to help out wherever he is needed.
Frank Markey – Assistant Coach – Frank was a four year oarsman at the University of Virginia and started at Unionville in the spring of 2016.
